The Case of the “Magic Cheese”

A French woman is facing charges in Chile for conning thousands of people to produce “magic cheese”. A cheese that she insisted could later be sold at a massive profit to the cosmetics industry.

The French hustler, 67 year old Gilberte Van Erpe, was arrested last week after being on the run for nearly two years.

It is estimated by the police that she scammed herself somewhere between £11 million and £13 million to invest in her product. “We call it the case of the magic cheese,” said Isabelle Montagne, a spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office.

She persuaded the victims to invest in a cheese making kit that cost £260 and would pay them double the amount when she collected the cheese to sell on. This she claimed would make soaps and other beauty products.

The kit only cost £3 to make and she never did buy back her cheeses. She now faces charges of “organised group embezzlement”.
